Today would have been my grandfather's 88th birthday. It was hard yesterday seeing all the veteran's and remembering everything that he went through serving our country in WWII.
My grandfather served in the 80th Infantry Divison from July 21, 1943 to November 1, 1945. He went to England on the Queen Mary and spent six months there before being captured by the Germans in Northeast France. The prisoners were then transported to prison camps in boxcars which were shelled by the Americans as the Germans ran for cover. He was taken to a farm to work for a family who had a son in a POW camp here in Georgia. He slept in tight quarters with a coffee can for a latrine and was made to work in wooden shoes. He was freed by Patton's army after spending 9 months as a German POW.
